Whether it’s a quiet supper among friends, a lively cocktail affair, or a milestone worth shouting about, this hall fits the bill. Origins

Jack’s was founded in 1864, when Sacramento Street was still scrubland and jackrabbits darted through the empty lots that would one day become the city’s commercial core.

Jack’s was founded in 1864, when Sacramento Street was still scrubland and jackrabbits darted through the empty lots that would one day become the city’s commercial core.

Its French proprietor, George Voges, christened the restaurant “Jack’s” as a nod to a frontier city in the making. Rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, Jack’s endured as one of San Francisco’s most important civic dining rooms. In the early 1900s, mayors and planners met upstairs to debate the city’s reconstruction, sketching Market Street and the Civic Center over seafood and martinis. The decision to bid for the 1915 World’s Fair was sealed here. Mayor Joseph Alioto later made Jack’s his unofficial office, finalizing appointments over rounds at the bar. Real estate deals, newspaper mergers, and shipping contracts were signed on cocktail napkins, while early conversations around the Golden Gate Bridge and the Transamerica Pyramid unfolded long before they reached City Hall.

Diego Rivera Painting the Fresco “Still Life and Blossoming Almond Trees", Atherton, California 1931

"San Francisco is very beautiful. Our way here was also very beautiful. For the first time I got to see the Ocean, and I loved it! The city is in a beautiful location, from everywhere you can see the sea. The bay is beautiful and ships arrive from China and from everywhere in the Orient."  Frida Kahlo on San Francisco

Jack’s lived not only in policy but in legend. Alfred Hitchcock dined here while filming Vertigo and The Birds. Ernest Hemingway asked Ingrid Bergman to star in For Whom the Bell Tolls at a Jack’s table. Mark Twain held court from his corner seat, while Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera traded sketches for dinner during Rivera’s mural years. Long lunches, tableside crêpes suzettes, the oyster pan roast, and the ritual of the ice-cold Jack’s Martini became part of a culture where gathering shaped the city itself.

Today, the landmark is revived by Skylight as a modern civic salon. At the intersection of Jackson Square, Chinatown, and FiDi, Jack’s honors its legacy while embracing what San Francisco can become: an intimate, influential living room for the city. Arts, commerce, and community converge here again, not to dwell on the past, but to animate the future. You are the protagonist now, with a new chapter to write over a round of martinis at Jack’s.

An Integral Expression of Our Hospitality

An Integral Expression of Our Hospitality

The culinary program, helmed by Chef Rupert Blease (Michelin-starred Lord Stanley, Wolfsbane) and Tommy Halvorson of The Fire Society, serves as an integral expression of our hospitality. The menus draw inspiration from Jack’s original Belle Époque–era dishes, thoughtfully reinterpreted, creating a sense of nostalgia that transports guests to another era.

**All F&B service and staff is coordinated through The Fire Society.

Jack's takes its name not from a man, but from the jackrabbits that once bounded across the open land where the restaurant would become a city institution.

Jack's takes its name not from a man, but from the jackrabbits that once bounded across the open land where the restaurant would become a city institution.

To bridge eras, Skylight commissioned Kellie Menendez, founder of Half Full and a celebrated San Francisco artist, to hand-draw the wallpapers that wrap the room. Her work nods to French proprietor George Voges, who christened the restaurant after the jackrabbits of Sacramento Street, and layers in a pastoral Golden Gate Park and a celestial ceiling, linking land and sky, heritage and imagination. Within gilded reliefs and original crown moldings, Kellie’s artistry anchors Jack’s interiors in the city’s past, while opening a constellation of possibilities for what a civic gathering place can be now.
